The department evolved from the Department of Applied Mathematics at Beijing Institute of Technology. In 1981, it was among the first institutions granted PhD granting rights in applied mathematics by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In 2021, the Mathematics and Applied Mathematics program was approved as a national first-class undergraduate program. The department currently has 29 faculty members, comprising 11 professors, 6 associate professors, 6 tenured associate professors, 5 tenure-track assistant professors, and 1 laboratory instructor. Primary research areas include partial differential equations and their applications, graph theory, combinatorics and optimization, fuzzy mathematics, and mathematical methods for signal and image processing. Research achievements have been published in internationally renowned journals such as Archive for Rational Mechanics and Analysis, American Journal of Mathematics, Mathematische Annalen, Advances in Mathematics, SIAM Journal on Optimization, Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series B, Transactions of the American Mathematical Society, Journal of Functional Analysis, and IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing.
