The predecessor of Department of Mathematics was the Department of Applied Mathematics at Beijing Institute of Technology. The Department of Applied Mathematics of our university was founded in 1950 and had several times of adjustments since then. It was renamed officially as the Department of Mathematics in 2011 when the School of Mathematics and Statistics was established in the same year.
The Department of Mathematics at Beijing Institute of Technology is one of the major research mathematics departments in China. It has an excellent research reputation, a strong, demanding program of graduate study in mathematics, and a full range of excellent undergraduate course offerings. The department consists of 33 permanent faculty with research interests in virtually every filed of pure mathematics. Among them, there is 1 recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 3 recipients of the National Excellent Youth Science Fund, and 2 recipient of the Youth Program of the National High-Level Talent Plan. Students, faculty, and numerous visitors are encouraged to interact through a variety of courses, seminars, colloquium. The faculty have been supported in their research by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other organizations. Graduate students are supported by numerous teaching assistantship and fellowship, including China Scholarship Council awarded in recent years. Our graduate students and teachers have their offices in Building Wencui overlooking North Lake, with a view of Xishan to the northwest. The mathematics lounge, where afternoon tea is served daily, makes a convenient meeting place for students and teachers. The Mathematics Library located in the same building, has an outstanding collection of textbooks, monographs and mathematical periodicals. Our department has over 50 full-time students in the graduate program and over 100 undergraduate majors.
In terms of talent cultivation, the Department of Mathematics focuses on training students who are passionate about mathematics and have a solid foundation in the subject, with the goal of nurturing researchers who will pursue theoretical research in pure mathematics in universities or research institutions. At the same time, we also aim to cultivate personalized and innovative scientific and technological talents with a profound background in mathematics.
