Beijing Institute of Technology is authorized to offer a Master of Science program in the sub-discipline of Probability Theory and Mathematical Statistics since 1984. In 2003, the department launched a Bachelor of Science program in Statistics. In 2010, the department was approved to offer a Master of Science program in Applied Statistics. In 2011, it was authorized to confer doctoral degrees in Statistics as a first-level discipline. In 2021, the Bachelor of Science program in Statistics was recognized as a National First-class Undergraduate Program. In 2025, the department launched a Master of Science program in Data Science. Currently, the Department of Statistics has the following primary disciplinary directions: mathematical statistics, industrial statistics (including experimental design and reliability optimization), biostatistics, big data analysis, and data science.
The academic staff and students of the department have made significant research contributions. In recent years, they have published numerous high-quality papers in top journals in statistics and machine learning, such as the Journal of the Royal Statistical Society: Series B (JRSS B), Annals of Statistics (AoS), Journal of the American Statistical Association (JASA), Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR), and Technometrics. Our staff have also made notable contributions to addressing national strategic priorities. They have served as principal investigators for projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), as well as projects funded by the State Administration for Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense. These researches have been successfully applied to the reliability design and analysis of explosive products. The department also received two relative awards.
The Department of Statistics is dedicated to empowering students by enhancing their learning abilities and supporting their career development. Students are encouraged to participate in academic competitions such as mathematical modeling, under the guidance of our staff. Several students have won first prizes in the North American Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students, the Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition, and the National Statistical Modeling Competition. Several students have been awarded national scholarships and outstanding graduates in Beijing. By combining theoretical coursework with practical training, undergraduate and postgraduate students will develop strong expertise in data analysis and programming, preparing them for high-quality careers in technology, finance, manufacturing, and related industries. Furthermore, PhD students will receive rigorous training in both general statistical theory and their specialized research areas, preparing them to become academic staff or researchers in statistics and data science.
